In lieau of its legal mandate, the Food and Drug Administration examined eighteen (18) E Cig cartridges.The cartridges were tested under two conditions which are both temperature controlled in order to identify the health risks associated with each condition used..
The first test simulated use of the E Cig cartridges with temperatures between forty and sixty five degrees Centigrade. The second test condition, moreover, involved the exposure of cartridges at two hundred degrees Centrigrade.. According to the results from the FDA, it was found that tobacco specific nitrosamines and tobacco specific impurities were detected in both products at very low levels.
In addition to this, the E Cig report adds that nicotine is also present in both products.. According to them, the Smoking Everywhere Electronic Cigarette cartridges which are being marketed to not contain nicotine actually have the chemical in very low amounts.. Tobacco specific nitrosamines and tobacco specific impurities were detected in both products at very low levels. High levels of DEG were also found on the cartridge. .
The FDA also analyzed the contents of the cartridges of E Cig used in the experiment. . The following are the chemicals identified:
¢ Diethylene Glycol. This chemical, known to be hazardous to humans who accidentally ingest it, was found on one of the cartridges. . However, even though the said chemical is commonly found on antifreeze, its dosage in the cartridge is only low so it is deemed safe on the system even if ingested.;
¢ Tobacco Specific Nitrosamines. Only trace elements were found in the E cig cartridge and the levels were consistent with those present in nicotine replacement aids. Many researchers agree that these low levels of tobacco nitrosamines does not cause cancer or cancerous growths in users;
Comparatively, the FDA found the following chemicals in regular tobacco cigarettes:
¢ Compared to the E cig cartridges, regular tobacco cigarettes contain 300 to 1400 times the level of nitrosamines because of the burning of tobacco, impurities, flavors and even the cigarette paper;
¢ Carcinogenic chemicals found only in regular cigarettes and not in E Cig cartridges include Arsenic, DDT, Nitrobenzene, Nickel, Lead, Cadmium and Polonium 21. Regular cigarettes have a total of 10,000 chemicals when burned.;
While there have been criticisms on the testing procedure used for the E Cig cartridges, the sheer volume of carcinogens and other chemicals produced in the use of regular cigarettes can still lead to more unhealthy effects in the long run for the individual. Electronic cigarettes, therefore, are the better alternative to average tobacco cigarettes..
As can be seen, even the leading governmental agency has confirmed that regular cigarettes pose a greater health risk to users compared to the use of E Cig and its cartridges. While it is confirmed that there are nitrosamine content in the E Cig, their levels are very much lower compared to those imbibed by users with each puff of regular tobacco cigarettes. Both provide the nicotine desired when heated, the byproducts though are very different. Based from the FDA, amounts of ingested toxic carcinogens and harmful chemicals is almost nil as compared to regular tobacco cigarettes..
